I wouldn't want to speculate but someone else here said that the iPhone
would be available in Australia later this year.

Right now, that would be a BIG problem. Last summer, hmm, that's the
Northern Hemisphere summer, roughly July to September, people found
ways to open the iPhone to use with cell services other than the official
providers. This was shut down by a later firmware update. In some cases
those users were left with a non-functioning iPhone and, when functionality
was restored through Apple supplied methods, those phones would
not work except with the official cell service providers (in the US that
would be ATT).
Even if you were bring in an iPhone from outside Australia, I think
there is a good chance it wouldn't work at all in Australia unless you
spent the extra money for an Apple-supplied unlocked phone. It is
my understanding that some countries such as France mandate that
an unlocked version of cell phone models must be offered by cell phone
service providers but it doesn't mean the companies have to sell the
unlocked version for the same "low" price either.
My biggest concern is that you might end up with a non-functioning
iPhone.
If I were you, I'd just wait until it's officially released in Australia.
If you can't resist, for the general "cool" factor get an iPod Touch.
Hank
