Hi Michael
Baseball is a simple game. You throw the ball. You hit the ball. You catch the ball.
I joined our MUG when the President assumed he was Leader for Life. After being in charge for over eight years I guess its understandable. He controlled the club name, website and all funds raised. He decided what was discussed and when. He banished opposing members at his will (and even hired off-duty local police to enforce this ... with the club paying them).
The only way we survived was he died. Yup. He keeled over from a heart attack.
It took a year for members to put our Humpty Dumpty back together again. This time we tried sharing authority so we could change with the times and the tastes of the membership. Bylaws spelled out who can do what.
It seems that it doesn't matter the size of any group, the ego of its leaders can still be the same size... HUGE.
You're right, though. If we're all getting along, rules can get in the way. I guess that these Bylaws should be an agreement of groundrules. They can guide us if someone drops the ball.

I don't mean to hijack this thread but maybe its time to start thinking
outside of the box here. What reason is there for bylaws and a BOD except to
comply with local laws because you are forced too?
I assume most here have 501C3 status but for what reason? What does your
group gain from this status? What does the community you are giving back to
gain from all this?
The group I run has no 501c3 status and no BOD and no bylaws and we get
along just fine. We are giving back here just fine and have no "rules" to
tie us up.
This discussion is about changing bylaws, but why? Why change them? Why have
them?
Just throwing this out for discussion and not making comment.
