Hi Dave
I think that it might be that Gail is being respectful of the vendors
involved. Often, a vendor will offer swag or products because he or
she has an ongoing professional relationship with a specific reviewer
and may not want unsolicited requests. You might be shocked at the
volume of requests that the user group program gets from both user
group members (a good thing) and the many people who simply write
because they'd like things. The large volume of nonrelevant requests
is one reason that the form is now restricted to user group ambassadors.
Contacts also appreciate respectful treatment of their information.
For example, a while back a well-meaning volunteer sent a request to
a large group of vendors without using the bcc function (so that all
recipients got a full list of vendor contact names and emails) and
the commentary and responses were harsh - relationships were damaged
and a lot of apologies had to be made.
Too, some relationships are Expo based, in that folk meet at the Expo
but do not keep track of each other's email or other personal data.
So, Gail's suggestion was a good one: the best way to promote a
relationship with a vendor is to write to their marketing department
and ask if the vendor has a user group program or contact. Then,
offer the contact ways that you can promote their products or get the
word out. This can take time, but both sides then have a stake in a
win-win (sorry for the tired cliche there). Far from hoarding, Gail's
offer was a generous and thoughtful one (first time I have seen this
offer on the AUG-D list).
That's my two cents - your mileage may vary
