Just to share my thoughts on door prizes and such.
When you plan a meeting to include a software review, contact the
software vendor and ask for a copy for the reviewer and a copy to give
away. then go to your group and say " Hey we have free copy of XYZ for
someone that wants to demo it." You get a evening's program and a
giveaway. Only rarely have we had a vendor say no, and usually that
isn't a no but but no response from an attempt to contact them. Every
once and a while the vendor goes out of their way - sends other swag.
Consider buying your door prizes. We have a board member that is a
prolific bargain hunter. You'd be surprised at the number of thumb
drives or CD's or jewel cases, etc.. that can be had very cheaply.
But, we also pony up for better door prizes, $15 itunes gift cards are
a hit. Good door prizes are a great membership builder. For us door
prizes are a member only benefit.
Also consider raffles. These are for bigger ticket items. Use these to
generate income. We have offered iPods, iPod Touches, external hard
drives, airport extreme, airport express, and currently, and have an
iMac raffle going on. Our raffles are open to the public.
Both door prizes and raffles are big hits with our group. They have
proven to be good membership builders and retention tools. Don't be
skimpy.

I'm sure the vendors would be very pleased if you told us whom gave
you donations and what they gave you.
