While I'm posting a new release about the ongoing Twitter compromise
attack, I get a "Domain not available" notice from UGNN.com.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Unfortunately, those who may be reading yesterday's InfoManager today
may meet with a "This web site is off line" notice from our host
FatCow.com.
InfoManager and UGNN have been the victim of what is called a "Joe
Job" -- an attack by cybercriminals retaliating against UGNN for our
relentless fight against spam. They sent UCE under our email
generating "complaints" to the host that InfoManager is sending UCE.
This is simply not true. We regularly get dozens of UCE mails that
have spoofed our addresses in an attempt to get us shut down. This one
time they succeeded.
Since 1994, Infomanager has maintained an iron-clad Opt-in *and*
Opt-Out policy and mechanism. The unsubscribe notice has been in each
and every email since 1994. We react to alerts and unsubscribes faster
than 99.8% of other entities online, including FatCow.
FatCow didn't bother to check our credentials, or even check the
headers in the complaint email. They didn't even contact me before
blocking the domain. All would clearly see that the abuse notice is
there, and that even SpamCop has UGNN whitelisted. Had they taken a
moment to check, they would have seen that we are probably one of the
least likely on this planet to send spam.
The tech services at Fatcow have assured us that the site will be back
up and running momentarily. I will check again in the morning, to make
sure.
So, if you're chasing Infomanager stories from yesterday's newsletter,
please bear with us and try again later.
My only extreme disappointment is that this event has tarnished our
reputation, and that we have yet another indication that the internet
industry as a whole is not prepared to intelligently deal with the
onslaught of cybercrime. A condition that greatly concerns those of us
who know what is actually happening to the online world.
Thanks for reading.
Fred
