I am surprised that no one in this discussion group has asked a question or commented about the uncertainty many MUG groups are facing about the impact of iCloud upon club web sites so I decided to try to crack the apparent log jam.
We may be the ONLY MUG but we have been full into using Apple features / software to promote our club and to show how Apple products can be used. Incidentally, we have paid the full price for the homepage service, and software and NOT used the complimentary offerings. Frankly the work to go through the salesforce testing (and for the past 3 years of not being able to access the site(s)) isn't economical. I'd rather pay the $$ than lose the hours of web site time. {Sorry for this sidestep, it isn't my point}
Naples (FL) MacFriends User Group has two homepage type sites that we use extensively to reach out to community non-members / support our education programs / and communicate to our members and those in our community that might have interest about NMUG's weekly and monthly meetings or courses. We moved to Apple web services from a different service to showcase Apple
I've been reading all I can find about iCloud that is available to non-Apple personnel via the Internet. Everything I've seen says that Apple is going to Stop supporting Web Hosting (that means the above web site has to be moved / redone to a commercial hosting service like GoDaddy. Stop development of iWeb (probably already has like AppleWorks)
I find it disgusting that MUGs are left hanging about what is coming and what will be trashed. I am not asking that a very good product (from the user's viewpoint) be forced to continue if it doesn't make business sense to Apple. Rather I'm complaining that MUGs are left hanging
Incidentally, I received a message indicating that over 1.39 million web sites (not pages) use the homepage.mac.com URL start. (I have 3 in addition to the 2 NMUG ones) And equivalent numbers use other services.
And my last question is: Do you know that this isn't an issue for those who have used Apple's services? If so, please respond
Jerry King, President Naples MacFriends User Group
