Concatenating variables

Hi all,
I am new to Automator, but diving in head first. Unfortunately, I think I have bitten off more than I can chew for my first project...
I want to access a spreadsheet I'm using as a template. It is in a specific location, so I can easily locate it. I then want to make a copy in a subfolder that is named after the current year and rename it to XXX<current_year><current_month_as_a_number>. So the template is copied to a new file named 2012/XXX201201. I think that Variables are the way to go, but there doesn't seem to be any way to concatenate variables to build up a path for the copy operation.
Ideally, I'd like to also modify cells in the spreadsheet to create strings, like this "Expenses January 2012". I have Numbers installed, but there appears to be no Automator actions available.
Any suggestions on how to accomplish this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.
Paul
