The main reason that you have not heard any color gurus weighing in on this
product is because Pitman has an exclusive arrangement with DuPont for not
only distribution but installs and training as well. Which means that there
are no certified independent color consultants for this product. In my
estimation that is not a good thing but then again I am an independent color
consultant.
As far as which product to recommend. I think it is clear that Best has
become the industry standard inkjet proofer RIP. I really promote the
straight ICC workflow which Best supports where you achieve your color match
with ICC profiles only, no edits, tweaks, or curves on top. If you edit
profiles in a proprietary way at the RIP level in order to achieve a better
match to a press sheet, then you better be able to pull those profiles out
of the RIP and use them in Photoshop for making separations and attaining
accurate soft proofs. If you don't have that ability then you don't have a
color managed "workflow" you have a color managed proofer. It all depends
what your needs and wants are, so you be the judge.
ChromaPro is not Best. The previous offering from DuPont which was called
ColorStation was OEM'd from Best. As well as the Kodak Matchprint Inkjet
RIP. I think that if both DuPont and Kodak OEM'd Best originally it is
probably because it is a damn good product that they didn't feel they could
top. If you can't beat em' OEM it from em'.
