Some one can clarify this for me:
When printing to non PostScript printer like Inkjets in Windows, the
interpretation is done by GDI and in MacOS 9 is done thru QuickDraw;
but what happens in MacOS X? I guess this is done by Quartz
correct
which is a PDF engine at system level (am I right?).
It has PDF capabilities at the system level yes
If this is correct, any printer in MacOS X is PostScript by nature,
no Postscript is only created when printing to a Postscript device.
That would be taking a step backward indeed!
and if ColorSync is built in Quartz is possible to color manage any
print at system lever.
that is true
So, what is the purpose of using a 3th party RIP? I think that a RIP
is unnecessary in MacOS X if the system has a built in RIP based on
PDF which is the successor of PostScript. Can I trust the
interpretation of the PostScript done by Quartz while printing from
applications like InDesign or Freehand?
The system does not go that far - nor do we want it too.
A RIP is used when people want Postscript control over a device and/or
greater control over each device channel. You can have a RIP without
Postscript or with. In the color world we tend to look at the greater
control over each color channel that a RIP allows. There are also
workflow, nesting, multi-user and other capabilities a RIP offers.

Thanks for your answer Steve,
I am clear about the advantages using a RIP, like those that you
mention in your replay, but the issue I am trying to understand is, if,
when I print to an Inkjet in MacOS X from say Freehand or InDesign the
interpretation or the PostScript is done by a true Adobe compliant
interpreter which is Quartz, does it means that the output in the
printer is exactly the same as a PostScript level 3 RIP, or is possible
like in QuickDraw, that the final output be slightly different (ej. in
composition).
In the color management issue, where do I specify the printing profile?
Quartz reads the embed profiles in the documents? The color conversion
also apply to vectors or is only for images?
Thanks.
