A spherical spectro is sometimes recommended for reading irregular
surfaces that scatter a lot of light, but they are much more expensive
than a "conventional" spectro. The helpful Colour Scientist Richard
Harold once described to me the following simple test to determine
whether you need to consider a spherical spectro or not. Assuming you do
not have a spherical spectro to hand to compare measurements against,
take multiple readings of the same swatch with your "conventional"
spectro, but rotate it 90 degrees between each measurement. If the
measurements vary outside of your colour management tolerance then you
might consider the expense of a spherical spectro.
