Thanks Neil,
I know it's a strange question. I would assume that the AB coordinates
would have to be close to the ink of the press and the Luminosity
coordinate would be the most key factor. I am looking for a way to
direct colorblind pressmen to pay attention to the supplied proofs. I
need a way of building a simple "box" that I can direct a colorblind
press crew into.
Most all web presses have a simple densitometer available. It will
demand reasonable spectral control of on my end, but if I state the full
spectral readings in CIE lab (presumably within SWOP standards) and
equate them into a density/gain reading.
I could command better results with the use of their use of their own
equipment and remove some of the subjective influence that they all want
to apply to the press results.
I'm not sure how I would convince them that this is a reasonable request
without good back up information from a good respected source. Besides I
may be out in left field.
Hope you are still following me. ;^)

I have a question for anyone with press simulation
experience with modern color management.
Can a densitometer be used for visual gain
comparison between a contone proof such as from an
Epson proofer and a printing press?
Is there a white paper on this somewhere that I can
read?
Not quite sure what visual gain means with the use of hardware instrumented
density readings but you can certainly read density on press runs and a
press simulation on an inkjet. You could then modify either the
linearisation of the inkjet rip and or profile to represent this correlated
dot gain. The thing to watch for though with densiometry applied to inkjets
are the color of the inks don't always fit into the expected filter response
of the reflected light off the inkjet prints. So not only will the blacks be
different (mismatched colors) but also overprinting colors and grey scale.
Good reading would be Bruce Fraser, Chris Murphy and Fred Bunting's book on
color management, Real World Color Management > Peachpit press.
