Does someone know an way to get satisfactory b&w results for printing on

Using either the ImagePrint or ColorBurst RIP will do this.

As will QuadtoneRIP for far less money, and far more user control
including hardware linearization.
Any other good RIP with some user talent as well. StudioPrint, etc..

Tyler,
Earlier this year we had a meeting of imaging experts at my office and the
Color Burst folks brought quad ink prints and four color Epson prints of
grayscale images. The experts could not see the differences easily and in
some cases were just guessing at which was a quad ink set vs the 4 color
grayscale ink set. This lead me to the conclusion that of why have a quad
printer and then a color printer when you can have one printer to produce
both grayscale and color prints.

Consistency of the printer on producing neutral greys ? Fading
of one of the colors in time ? Metamerism with the composite
greys ? Of course that's all easier to solve with the extra grey
in the Epson Ultrachrome ink set. But that's a half quad in a sense.
Quad inks can only be replaced by ink sets that have at least 3
grey inks or by printers that have a droplet size that allows a
smaller range of grey inks. The black + grey nozzle quantity
should also be high enough to compensate the overlap/weaving that
is possible with quads. The Epsons are close with the R800 and
the 4000 but not there yet. If a digital B&W printshop wants to
get close to the fade resistance of analogue silver B&W prints
then a quad printer is the right answer.
Chris;
The latest MIS quad inks are on the same level as Ultrachrome
inks are for printing on all papers including RC. No clogg
problems here. If dye ink is preferred then you can get quad dye
ink from Lyson. The 7000 was a dye ink printer originally, like
the 9000's that I have. One is running Generations pigment ink
for four years now, the other the latest MIS Ultratone quads.
There have been some problems with clogging but less with the
Ultratone than with Generations. No problem with Epson service
for the four year that I use third party inks and I know at least
4 printshops that do the same without problems. I know you like
to write that third party ink story again and again but it isn't
what I experienced.
