I don't believe, personally, that whichever K gen combination has any
influence on the quality of neutrals. But that's me. Because, the way I see
it, various K gen all stem from the same fundamental neutral gray
representation. So, if more K is called for, then less CMY is emitted but
the overall thoretical neutral inferred by the profiler from the original
measurements does not change. Yes, different packages will infer different
neutral builds from the same original set of measurements but I don't expect
it to change from within a given profiler.

Well, no. Yes, in theory but no in practice. I don't have a problem with the
predicted vs actual neutrality being different at various K gen settings
because of the physical nature of the inks. That is the sad reality.
Especially on some inkjet printers (some suffer more or less from this
imperfect ink formulation, I gather). It's been mentionned many times here,
on this list, and elsewhere on the net, that often, it is preferable to add
more K in the conversion from the Source to Destination to lessen the effect
of metamerism optically induced by certain inks. I believe Epson yellow is a
prime example of this phenomenon. So, more K will, in theory, yield the same
neutral but, in actuality, more K has the added advantage of avoiding some
of the metameric yellow in the final CMYK receipe. (Please excuse the loose
usage of the word metameric in the above -- that's the only word I could use
that best relates the meaning I'm trying to convey).
