I'm certainly not a fan of measuring process values using L*, because it
doesn't make any technical sense. You don't minimize your random errors by
weighing in readings from wavelengths that are not affected by a colorant,
which is what happens when you try to do colorant control using L* as a measure.
It's also going to be rather sensitive to any shifts in the spectral characteristic
of the colorant, something that is irrelevant (and out of the scope of) how much
colorant a device is laying down.
proofer, we are not typically measuring colorbars. And.....even if we
are.....we understand that color is the bigger factor. It took the inkjet
RIP world a number of years to figure out that people care more about color
than density on their proofer, and that an L/C linearized print condition
will yield more consistent visual stepping between reproduction of tone, and
also yield a more "spatially uniform color platform" on which a profile can
be built.
I think it's important not to mix up what you are measuring the process with,
and how your aim points are being determined. By all means set a desired
colorant curve that's linear in L* (if that's what you decide is desirable),
but use a measure that's appropriate to measuring the colorant level, such
as density. For a specific colorant, a custom density measure might be desirable,
rather than an industry standard one (ie. pick the wavelengths to use to cover
the area most affected by a particular colorant, while not straddling the edges of it).
