The big reason for using the Color Navigator software with Eizo
displays is that the product profiles with a linear vcgt tag. The video
card is not used for calibrating the display, including gray balancing
it. Rather, this is done internal to the display itself. The only other
software packages that do this are basICColor Display and ColorEyes
Display. The best results I've seen thus far have come from ColorEyes
Display (and I'd expect also from basICColor Display as well since it's
using the same underlying technology), with the Color Navigator
software itself being a close second. Anytime I use something else in
addition, in lieu of, that depends on modifying the video card LUT
instead of the the LUT in the display, I get what appears to be
calibration induced posterization and crossovers in gray balance. It's
not hideous by any means, but I do notice it.
Also, if you're going to use any of these three mentioned packages, you
can pick a color temperature more suited to your environment, and
preference because again this is updated in the display, not in the
video card. The reason for recommending native white for flat panels
has to do with the lack of in-display controls for adjusting white, and
such heavy reliance on video card LUT adjustment causes more problems
than it solves.
