I have been looking for a RIP that will use the matte black ink channel
on the 4000 for gloss optimizer. I use the printer for photo only
luster type paper. Anybody know of such animal?
Dick
Dick,
The 4000 doesn't allow the two black channels to be driven at
the same time. Not by the Epson driver and not by any other
RIP AFAIK. But if you want a second run with gloss optimiser
only then QTR will do that in controlled way (amount of gloss
optimiser). Of course the Epson driver could do something less
controlled if you feed it a 100% black image with gloss
optimiser in the matte black position. The 4800 with gloss
black probably gives better gloss results though.

Roger,
Third party ink distributors/manufacturers like MIS have made
clones of the gloss optimiser ink as used in the Epson
R800/R1800. In printers converted to B&W inksets it is quite
easy to keep a channel reserved for that "varnish" "glop". The
R800/R1800 applies the glop on the parts that get less normal
ink to compensate the gloss difference. With QTR it can be
done in several ways but the best result seems to be an extra
print run over the total image.
