You should lower the brightness with pretty much any LCD that isn't going to
be used in direct sunlight. I've never tried the software you're using, but
every package I've seen includes a brightness adjustment step as part of the
calibration process.
You should not try to make it match your PowerBook or any other display, as
you will probably never succeed, and you should use whatever gamma setting
gives you the least amount of banding. 1.8 is usually a little washed out.
