It is important to to use a dye-based greyscale such as a Kodak ST34 rather
than a Stouffer 21 step silver based greyscale in projection systems.
Stouffers are fine for doing contact work such as the old platemaking in a
vacuum plate frame, and much less expensive.
Silver images suffer from Callier Effect or ³Q² factor, a scattering of
light which will change your measurements in projections systems, which
includes drum scanners. It is true that chromes start as silver based
images, but the silver is removed with bleach/ fix in processing, leaving
only the dye.
I believe one can order the Kodak scale from scanner supply house Prazio at
www.prazio.com. Worth every cent (or Peso/Euro/...) for optimizing grey
balance, etc.
Thanks so much for all of you on this list who share your knowledge so
unselfishly!
