Hi Carlo,
Using paraffin oil for loading transparencies for hi-end scanning is
pretty standard practice and doesn't harm the transparency, i have been
a scanner operator for 12 years. The paraffin oil helps fill in the
scratches on the emulsion of the transparencies to eliminate scratches
appearing in your scans and reduces the amount of dust in your scans as
well.
I am personally a little skeptical when it comes to profiling hi-end
scanners and digital cameras, I tested once to create a profile for our
Linotype Hell S3300 drum scanner with the 'KODAK Q-60' target and
ProfileMaker. I found that when ProfileMaker calculates the profile, it
neutralizes the grey of the target which didn't surprise me at first.
What does concern me though is that these KODAK targets are mass
produced and when I view my target on our GTI light box, the gray of
the target is not exactly neutral (a little yelllowish). Therefore all
my scans were scanning in more cooler with a reduction in yellow
because my profile was created with a not so dead neutral target, but
that's only my experience though!! As a scanner operator, I have always
setup scanners over the years to reproduce the colors faithful to the
original copy or media.
I now scan in LAB using LinoColor's 6.0 default profiles, a set my
highlight and shadow range, maybe a little global color correction and
that gets my scans about ninety five percent there. I then use
Photoshop as a replacement for LinoColor to make any minor edits in
Photoshop, working in either LAB or RGB on my Eizo CG21 monitor and
viewing the transparencies on our GTI lightbox.
My two cents,
