Dipping my toe in this murky water, are you sure there is only one "default
generic input profile"? I've always had the impression that there are many.
For instance, there are 14 different D2x mode 2 profiles in my Nikon
profiles folder. Not sure how they get there, but there isn't just one.
Surely each lighting condition needs a different input profile whether
custom or OEM. From what I read Photoshop ACR makes its own input profile
(from the lighting data) each time you process an image, and I assume the
Nikon camera does the same internally.
I don't understand why you need one 'generic' custom profile.
Perhaps I'm wrong on this.

My testing has shown that with Nikon D70 the embedded "modes" sRGB and Adobe
1998 are the result of conversions through a default generic input
"rendering"if you use Nikon Image Capture Editor for the raw conversion.
