I agree that this would work as you describe. Unfortunately, a camera is not like a scanner, and not making any adjustments other than gray balance and exposure within the RAW processor is not an acceptable workflow for most of us. Thanks for the clarifications.

I understand well that a camera is definately not a scanner. If one were to employ regimented gray balance techniques one can work very well in Nikon Capture for reliable outcomes. Then choose your custom profile assignment later downstream, ie, PS. The net result will be much more predictable (IMHO) than alternative approaches. Its not perfect by any means but its MUCH better than treating all your files as workspace targets and adjustment layers and color edit sets.
