So the decision is not clear...
I doubt the Epson 4990 can approach the quality of a Nikon 9000 or a
Minolta Dimage Multi Pro; not only is the resolution lower, but the
density range too.
Using old software as the Scitex Smart, results were predictable: you
would have to try hard to make a bad scan out of a good transparency.
And you could doo very good scans too, but always CMYK only. Basically
by scanning in automatic and just setting endpoints and gamma, you
were done. For a better scan, you could also adjust sharpening.
My impression is that current software would allow an experienced and
savvy user to make far better scans, by using custom profiles, ICE,
multisampling, and a complete assortment of tips and tricks. But on
the other hand, results in poorer scans (than obtained from Scitex
Smart) for many users who are hard-pressed to understand the
intricacies of endless settings.
What about the software driving the Nikon, Minolta and Artix scanners
respectively? any of these is a gem? any of them terrible? is
Silverfast better than them all?
