Hi
I'm minded to agree with those that question the general utility of camera
profiles. It seems to be a lot dependant on the type of work you want to use
them for.
I asked a while ago about using the SG target for calibrating ACR and (with
some help :-) was able to produce a version of the ACR calibrator script
that works fine with my Macbeth SG target. I've used the camera profile
building part of Eye one Match for making a few camera profiles as well.
Although the profile gives slightly better results when I compared the two
approaches, in the real world I just don't do much studio work, where I
think the difference would be more noticeable/useful. The ACR calibration
method has been useful at several events where I've used it to allow for
awkward lighting. I've even got ACR settings for a couple of venues where
I've worked several times, and it really does speed up my raw workflow.
If you look further down the page at
<http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/article_pages/eye_one_photo_SG.html> you
can see examples of the difference -- insofar as you can show it on a web
page that is :-) If you mouse over some of the images you can see the
results of applying a profile or just ACR corrections. It's not meant to be
an authoritative/conclusive test, but it matches pretty well with what I
found in general use.
Bye for now
Keith Cooper
