Well these are not ICC profiles of course. And the two profiles can be
used
to extrapolate a rendering based on your personal preference which in
my
book is ideal. I treat the RAWs like I would with a color neg (either
in a
scanner as when I printed them conventionally). Use the filter pack so
to
speak, that produces the color appearance I desire. No need to buy
targets,
software or go through any process other than maybe tweaking the
effect of
the two "profiles" using the Calibrate tab in ACR.
All that should be unnecessary. With an appropriate profile, shouldn't
the RAW converter render the image as it was shot, without setting
anything?
Also, I notice the word "desire" in that post. It seems that
photographers don't necessarily want accuracy to the scene as it was
shot. Perhaps, that's the greatest impediment to camera profiling.
I don't understand why you need one 'generic' custom profile.
If you profile a target under the reddening light of a sunset —
wouldn't the shots rendered through that profile neutralize the warm
grays?
Generic input profiles are what I am trying to avoid. If the camera/
raw
converter combination forces a conversion through them there is no
going
back. A custom profile made in precisely the same conditions as the
digital file, is the only bridge between the original scene colours
and a
specific camera's colour behaviour.
I disagree, but what's the big deal. Shoot the target under the same
conditions, and profile to your heart's content. It's not like it's
costing anybody anything. Why won't the camera manufacturers or Adobe
give you that option? Is ProPhotoRGB closer to the gamut of the scene
you're shooting or sRGB? And which one more accurately describes the
response of your camera?
The only other alternative is to manually calibrate the raw conversion
using
a raw converter such as Adobe Camera Raw.
Now, that's scanner-like.
