Nah. That'll just show you how your shot measures to the boundaries of
the color-space. That doesn't show anything about how things are gonna'
be mapped inside of there. Doesn't address hiccups and non-linearity of
the color-space, etc. There's no way that's gonna' be as accurate as a
custom profile.
What occurs to me, and maybe this is what you're bringing up, is that
the camera should have a MUCH broader response than what you can
measure from a reflective target. The light emitting body in a shot
(like the sun) should not be mapped to the L* value of the white spot
on a reflective target. Is that what your getting at? Then it's just a
matter of designing a better target, of sorts.
