Looked liked? The measured colors? OK, so we have a scene with a 10,000:1
contrast ratio. Now what? We need to compress it to fit some output device
(our display). Is it now accurate? Do we like the color? Is accurate color
always preferable color? I would suggest, not always (some might say
rarely).

What do you place in front of the sensor at the scene that has reference
data you can get to that is similar to this or all scenes we will capture?
What target is appropriate?

Why? If I can shoot a scene in RAW and produce the color rendering I want to
represent without a profile, what's the problem? If I had a printer that on
the fly converted the numbers for it's output, would I need a profile? If I
had a self calibrating display and the OS knew it's behavior, would I need a
profile? In the end, I want to produce some fixed color appearance from a
set of numbers (which is all computers understand). If I can produce that
appearance on differing output devices, do I need a profile? All I want is
to capture some scene and represent it onto some (many) output devices as I
wish to convey the scene. That may not be (and probably isn't) a
colorimetric match of the scene.
