Andrew,
<<photographers use the word "accurate" and that's not defined
(nor do we know what it means). Is a scene shot with Velvia more accurate
than that shot with Ektachrome? Accurate to the measured color of the scene,
our memory of the scene? Pleasing to the artist (or client)?>>
We don't generally want an accurate colorimetric match to the scene because
then the appearance won't be right. That's because the capture viewing
conditions are generally radically different than the output viewing conditions.
A good appearance match is important as the starting point for making editorial,
preferential, and rendering decisions. Photographers select film types for many
reasons. Two important ones are the ability of a film type to record the scene
appearance and render it in a particular way.
Thanks, Eric Walowit Tahoe
