Sometimes, the numbers inside a profile won't agree with our visual
impressions, such as when FWA is present in paper. In that case, all we can
hope is that the direction of the edits will be a relative predictor of
color, not an absolute predictor. In other words, if I see colors turning
red on screen, as a result of some edits, all it means is that on the
output, colors will be turning red. How red? Hard to say in absolute terms.
But as long as color do turn red I know I'm on the right track.
Unfortunately, colorimetry applied to ICC profiling is not an exact science.
I'd really like to call up some Lab numbers and up it comes on output!

The approach I take is to use a number of images that represent a good
sampling of color space.

Absolutely. I start with skintones images and then work my way to other
memory colors and so on. Oh! Editing gray balance shoul always be done
first.
