An alternative, not yet well known RIP solution is the colorXact Proof. It provides fully integrated ICC-colormanagement, linearisation, profiling, iterative profile correction, automated nesting and supports several printers. It is a client/server-based solution and runs both on OSX and Windows.

We just took delivery of one 5500ps with an onboard RIP and are in the process of purchasing a second unit as a replacement for our aging Oce printer/Onyx Postershop RIP (version 6.5).
We are considering purchasing the second unit with an external RIP to give us some flexibility in production. Basically, we'll use the printer with the onboard RIP as our "Kinko's" low-end product offering and the printer with the external RIP for our more color critical work and special medias.
Our options are to upgrade our existing copy of Postershop to version 7, or to invest in an alternate software RIP solution.
