Recently I was tasked with color managing a newer K3 EPSON 7800 and
an older K2 EPSON 9800. After running my test file through Photoshop
to each printer I quickly came to the conclusion that the EPSON 9800
was in OK shape and the EPSON 7800 was in need of some serious
maintenance.
EPSON tech was called in on service contract. He adjusted some
things, printed his test file (through the EPSON driver out of
Acrobat) and declared it was in good shape. Before he left, I reran
my test file out of Photoshop....
('Print with preview...', 'Let Photoshop Determine Colors' & EPSON
profile chosen, color management turned off, appropriate media type
and resolution chosen).
Color still wacked. EPSON tech throws up hands and says good luck.
They use an sRGB driver for testing.
Now, I wouldn't expect a canned EPSON profile to be spot on correct,
but I also wouldn't think it would be horribly wrong either (shadows
100% plugged up, midtones dark, etc, etc). I was fortunate enough to
have EPSON media and EPSON profiles which matched the media I was
printing to so I'm certain my Photoshop settings are correct. Of
course I'll need to custom profile for the 7800, but this color
behavior seemed very unusual for an EPSON product.
Does anyone have similiar experiences? Am I missing something?
