I've noted posts about problems with printing profiling charts from
CS4 on this list before but never came across the problem myself until
today.
Everything worked perfectly with my R2400, even after the 10.6 upgrade
I could use profiles made under 10.5 without a problem. I never had
any issue printing out charts from Photoshop CS4 and didn't have any
customers experiencing any problems either and since I run a remote
profiling service I get to do lots of RGB inkjet profiles.
However, today I took delivery of an Epson 4880 and came to profile it
for the first time and the chart came out very dark and muddy. I tried
different media types in the driver in case that was the issue. I
found some stuff on the net about problems if the default profile was
different from factory default and tried that but nothing worked. So
the obvious thing to do was to try a print from another application.
I chose Preview for ease, not really expecting to get a profile free
path but needing to convince myself that CS4 was the issue.
I set the Color Matching to Epson Color Controls and then selected No
Color Adjustment as normal. Printed the chart and it certainly looked
better. Built the profile and then went back to CS4 to print a test
image and it came out perfectly. Obviously there is a chance that the
print path from Preview still had a profile lurking there somewhere
and the same profile is active when I print from Photoshop but I got a
great result so it strikes me that printing from Preview might be a
usable workaround.
