Richard,
The NEC PA series incorporate surprisingly advanced technologies for the
price. I don't mean to sell it to you, by no means. But I think it holds its
own quite well, thank you, among, what, LaCIEs? Eizo's? HP Dreamcolor? What
else is there, out in that category? Those, to me, are the typical brands I
would look at, if I was in your shoes, and in need of convincing myself I'm
getting the most bang for my buck. But I wouldn't, if I was you ;-)
There are many pros and cons to each one of those makes. I think, LED is
"nice". Obviously, LCD still have a few healthy years ahead of them. So, the
choice is not necessarily LED or LCD, in my view. I've personally witnessed
some disappointing LEDs panels and some astonishing LCDs.
I know for my geld, I would want the most advanced screen controls I can get
today, like internal LUTs. That, to me, is a feature I would not want to
compromise on. The biggest and largest gamut I could possibly dream of?
Sure. (why not "dream" in color). But sheer gamut size isn't everything, in
my view. What about uniformity? That one is a bitch. I know some expensive
brands that claim the best of the best. Yet, when it is time to discuss
brightness or chromaticity uniformity with their tech support, well after
the monitor has been purchased, they come out with surprisingly "large"
tolerances that defeat their boasting tight specs in the first place. So,
many questions to ask, and often times, the information is not readily
available or they just won't give it to you.
I think one of the other interesting feature I would insist on, if it was my
money on the line, I'd want to have some kind of calibration and profiling
solution, whatever that entails. Be it a stand alone, third party solution
like ColorEyes or basICcolor or ColorVision or iMatch, I can't see how I
could afford to spend, I don't know, $1200 for a nice panel, and yet, not
having the dough for an instrument/software combo? I mean. You see my point.
So, you might want to consider a "bundled" solution as well. Some
manufacturers, like LaCie and Quatto, I believe, in Europe, make their
monitors available with and without some sort of color instrument and
software. What would I do? Well, I confess I'd be very tempted by something
that comes with the monitor, first, right? Logical? Especially *if* the
package in question has access to the internals of the monitor. I know I
would be tempted to believe that this would allow taking full advantage of
the monitor's advanced features, right?
And consider the viewing angle. And, possibly, the finish. I'm always
wrestling with this issue, glossy or mat? I think mat is still superior to
glossy but that has to be put in the overall context of the other monitor
features, in my view.
All in all, I don't think anyone buying one of the new PA series monitor
today would be making a bad decision.
BTW, I don't work for NEC ;-)
Best / Roger
