I doubt anyone really wants a single reference implementation that
prevents any possibility of innovation or even product choice.
The lack of firm foundations (no measurement based device
response data in an unambiguous format), the lack of clarity
in the V2 spec. and the subsequent flip flopping in the V4
spec. certainly seems to have created a rich environment for subtle
interoperability problems. Not something that can easily be
fixed now though. A #2 ICC could fix it, but design by committee
is always problematic, and persuading CMM vendors to support it
could be harder than migrating to V4. In my view a sensible
#2 ICC would start to look a lot like WCS (ie. split the
device measurement data from the other transformations)....
Problems with OS X and color ultimately have to be shouldered
by Apple, even if device and application vendors have played a
part in the problems. It is Apple that lays out the framework,
provides and documents the API's, and is in a position to help
test drivers and applications, and is the one that apparently
keeps changing things with each OS release. Apple is ultimately
responsible for the reputation of OS X as a suitable platform for
color critical work.
