Just to confirm, as of 3-4 months ago NikonUSA in Melville, NY was still
repairing the Coolscan 4000 on a parts available basis. I called and talked
to them directly. Are you saying they've directly told you otherwise?
If so, rats, I was hoping to get my 4000 serviced one last time. It's
working but has developed a few quirks recently.
If it were me I'd start watching craigslist/eBay and find another 4000 or
5000. I have seen no reports about the Plustek and am skeptical. I know
they are expensive on eBay, but summer is usually a good slow time to find
bargains, because of less bidders. Nikon's batch attachments for roll film
and 50 slides were pretty unique.
You could go for a an Eversmart Pro II, Select, or Supreme. Speed blows
Nikon away. Batch scanning is pretty great but not quite as nice as Nikon's
attachments. You do lose infrared dust removal/Digital ICE with Eversmarts
though, Genesis Marketing sells refurbished units and has a deep stock of
parts.
