Hi Jonathan,
I have been in conversation with Nikon over the last two weeks. They are no longer taking 4000 in for repair. I believe they are still repairing 5000 but it doesn't sound like it will be for much longer. I did found someone via eBay that repairs 4000. Let me know if you want his contact information. He is doing repairs with parts he bought out from Nikon and taking parts from old units.
I can't see investing in hardware that parts are no longer available which is why I am disinclined to buy a used 4000. The ScitexCreo are terrific but they are obsolete too. Am I correct they don't run on the latest Mac Os? So you essentially have to keep an out system around just to run the scanner. Repairs and parts will be the same issue as the Nikons.
Thanks, and please other people reading this, jump in. I'd love to hear what you are using to scan transparencies.

I know they are expensive on eBay, but summer is usually a good slow time to find bargains, because of less bidders. Nikon's batch attachments for roll film and 50 slides were pretty unique.

You do lose infrared dust removal/Digital ICE with Eversmarts though, Genesis Marketing sells refurbished units and has a deep stock of parts.

The PlusTek scanner was recommended. Since there are no local dealers I would have to buy it sight unseen and untested. Does anyone have experience with PlusTek? Other recommendations for a dedicated slide scanner? With that said, can a scanner that does both transparency and reflective deliver the same quality as a dedicated slide scanner?
