Yes, use gamma 2.2 (although it shouldn't matter in a color managed application)
An iMac crunches blacks and clips whites if uncalibrated, at least in my experience.
What brightness is the screen at? (Hint: max is way too bright in most cases)
Also: what image are you using to judge the screen, in what application?
IMHO, calibrating "by eye" is a good way to get 10 different results in as many tries. YMMV.
