Pete,

I'm not sure why Emagic would have told you that Apple will be releasing this driver. I think someone there must have been confused.

It is true that at Apple we created an Emagic driver for development purposes -- we used it to demo the MIDI Services at this year's and last year's Worldwide Developer Conferences, and we've used Emagic hardware to test everything. We've had a good, cooperative relationship with Emagic.

But there are a number of reasons why it's not in everyone's interests that Apple provide drivers for third-party hardware. In this case, we don't have the full specs for the hardware (e.g. we don't know how their proprietary features work, such as AMT and handling multiple networked devices, etc.). And it is in Emagic's interests to own and retain full control over the driver that will be entirely responsible for users' experiences with their hardware.

So, while such a driver does exist, I can't give it to you without Emagic's permission. It's possible that there are other contacts at Emagic who may be able to make the driver available to you. Have you checked their web site?

As an alternative, I believe Roland and MIDIMan both have MacOS X MIDI drivers available on their web sites.

As Laurent points out, OS X also contains a driver for USB MIDI Class-compliant devices. No such devices have shipped yet, but they're on their way, and this will solve the driver problem in a more general way.

Am I right in thinking that the coreMIDI forms part of the coreAudio api - if so then this is the correct list for my question.

I am developing a final year University project in Cocoa. The project uses MIDI, and I have an emagic usb MIDI adapter. I have emailed emagic to ask for a beta of their driver, but they informed me that the driver will be released by Apple. If there are any Apple bods on the list, could they answer the following questions:

1. Can I get hold of a beta (or similar) of the driver?

2. If not - do you have any timeframe for the release of this driver?

I have to submit the specification for this project within a week. I would hate to have work in another environment - so any info gratefully received.
