So, although I have started reworking my code to try the various
options described below, is there anyone who can give a quick tip on
whether either of these approaches are sane or not? Just wondering
if I'm going down the wrong road here....
Thanks,
Chris

So I should instead have a global AUHAL stored away somewhere, and
attach each sound's render callback to a bus on a mixer in front
of the AUHAL? (I need to use the matrix mixer rather than the
stereo mixer.) Does the matrix mixer allow me to add and delete
input busses while the graph is running?
Alternately, what is the performance penalty of defining a large
number of busses on a Matrix Mixer that will not be used?
Presumably the Matrix Mixer should just ignore busses for which it
has no render callback, and no harm done, right? So even if I
can't alter the number of busses while the graph is running,
perhaps I could pre-define a very high number of busses on which to
attach new sounds without imposing a nasty performance penalty?
Will I write any sentence in this email that doesn't end with a
question mark?
Chris?
