I have a question about Mac OS X on the Core Duo:
I've inspected the ia32_feature_control MSR on a Mac Book Pro and on
the Mac Mini. On the Mac Book Pro, the ia32_feature_control MSR is
untouched, and still has the CPU reset value of 0. On the Mac Mini
though, the firmware sets this register to 1.
Could someone from Apple explain why they have different values? Is
it a bug? Or is it a "Pro" feature, which the Pro products get to have?
I can understand if every x86 Mac sets this value to 1 for security
reasons. But the Mac Book Pro doesn't set it to 1.
Note that the agent setting the value to 1 is the Mac Mini firmware.
Darwin doesn't do it.
Is there someway I can configure the Mac Mini firmware to ignore the
register, or to set the value to 5? Or is that a Pro capability?
Regards,
Joshua
