Especially given that in our environment this exact requirement for strong,
constantly changing, 9-14 character passwords has been extended to all local
accounts as well. Even if Active Directory or CaC card authentication is
implemented, there is still the local root account to deal with.
Even a policy requiring all local accounts to be manually set to a strong
encrypted password is inadequate, as this flavor of linux truncates all
local passwords after the 8th character.
On a related note.
We have a policy that is moving everyone away from local logins to network
ones. I've done a quick search and found the recipe for configuring Macs to
use AD authentication, but I would like a more thourough understanding of
how the passwords are transmitted across the network before I start
implementing this. Does anyone know of any white papers describing this
process in detail?
Thank you.
