The safest and surest method is an archive and reinstall of 10.3.0 or
10.3.5 (if you have it, a standard install disk set came in the
developer mailing a while ago) followed by a combo update to 10.3.8,
then run the remaining patches. I've rebuilt 4 installations of 10.3.8
in the last week for various reasons (one was to put X11 on a new
laptop after updating to 10.3.8, the DVD comes with 10.3.7 and there is
no individual X11 package that I could find and an archive and
reinstall was easier then playing with package extractors).
The archive and reinstall is a lot easier then going any other route.
I personally like to run a difference between the new system and the
archived system using the terminal and diff -R. There would be less
differences if you install 10.3.8 combo on top of your existing
installation before the archive and reinstall, this is because 10.3.8
combo on 10.3 or 10.3.5 is different the 10.3/10.3.5 with individual
updates applied. I done the difference comparison several times, there
are numerous files with different version numbers inside them.
A reinstall gives you a chance to custom install better then you did
the first time (what languages do you need, printer drivers, etc.).
Also, the system is cleaner in the end.
Applications that put stuff into areas that archive and reinstall does
not copy over (on purpose):
Retrospect
Norton AntiVirus
Norton Utilities
EyeTV
tripwire
Caculator plugins (which don't seem to work in 10.3.8)
Mail Enhancer
Safari Enhancer
IntelliPoint
Also, if you customize you should keep very good records, typical areas
for customization:
/usr/local
/etc/ssh*
/etc/host.*
/Library/Frameworks
/etc/krb*
/Library/Quicktime
/Library/StartupItems
/etc/postfix
/etc/daily.local
/etc/crontab
/etc/ipnodes
/etc/issue
/etc/syslog.conf
/var/cron/tabs
I should note that some of these customizations are required under DoD
rules (/etc/issue, /etc/ssh*, /etc/hosts.*. ...). OS X is Unix, the
same rules apply even if the services are turned off (perhaps our local
rules differ from other bases).
