Paul,
DSS = Defense Security Service (http://www.dss.mil)
By "classify" I mean utilizing OS X in a "classified" area. In my
case, a closed lab. Certification means nothing. DSS authorization
means everything.
Having said that, there is a benefit of the certification. It means
that there is a glimmer of hope that we will be able to account for
everyone one of DSS's auditing requirements. For every system in a
classified environment we must go through the "certification"
process. Really, it is quite foolish - but, at some point there must
be accountability.
You'd think that after the first "clearance" it would be smooth
sailing. Not true. Bureaucrats need there empires I guess.

What are DSS issues? and What do you mean classify OS X systems?
OS X 10.3 went through some certification already right?

Unfortunately, we are faced with DSS issues when attempting to
classify OS X systems. The problem has nothing to do with
technical issues, or even security. It has more to do with
Windows being the incumbent (what "they" know) - and OS X
requiring effort from a process point of view.

Definitely - anything I can do to help I will do. You'd be

The first thing you are ALWAYS going to hear is "security"....
now how anyone can say security and Windows in the same sentence
always baffles me... but, they will say it.
I talked with the Army Web Administrator (http://www.army.mil) -
they migrated to OS X in 1999 (I believe) after being hit with a
windows hack... they have not been hacked since.
Bill Cerniuk composed a message for me explaining why they had
migrated, and the results of the migration...
When you are in a division of HHS - and you get the ARMY public
website backing you up on security - there is nothing a mindless
Windows following ISSO can do to discredit OS X security.
You'll then move to the "can't do certain tasks" argument... just
make sure you have all your ducks in a row. Hit the hard areas
(for us it is financial reimbursement)... show how the Mac will
keep generating funds when the rest of the systems are down -
they're in.
Partnerships with other Fed agencies are crucial, because as we
all know most of them (agencies) are afraid to be the first at
anything.
I am lucky to have people all the way up to the national CIO
believing in what I do - others are not always so lucky.
Show what the Mac can do that they NEED (like I did with X-
SYS)... then it will speak for itself.
At any rate - yes, anything you need from me I will do.

If any other agencies need a reference for Mac and Windows
interoperability - we have been migrating to Mac (server and
workstation) for over a year.
Recently - we have made plans and procured G5 iMac machines to
replace executive level (CEO, CFO, etc) Windows machines.
We were hit hard with a virus, so hard that the realization of
investment in slightly higher priced hardware in the beginning
results in far less expense in the future.
On the Tiger comments - you can get the latest and greatest of
everything for development and testing by joining the ADC
(Apple Developer Connection - http://connect.apple.com).
I've been developing on Tiger for over two months - and it is
truly the finest user and development experience I have ever
had (and I've developed under everything from CP/M, to Linux,
to Windows).

From my perspective. It was great that Apple spent all those
resources at FOSE. Compared to a few years ago where we had
to beg for resources to support this show. Having said that...
1) The Apple banner blended into the ceiling color of Dark
Grey/Black. I came down the escalator directly in front of
the booth and miss the booth!!!
2) Apple should have done more to educate the market at FOSE.
a) Education sessions on Mac OS X interoperability with
MS Windows
b) Education sessions on Mac OS X RAID or storage solutions
c) Education on OS X as a secure and real operating
system alternative to Windows
d) Education session on OS X security
Most of the federal population does know anything about
Apple. They lost touch long before Steve came back. The
booth did not really talk to those people that don't know the
OS X platform capabilities.
3) Apple booth should have Windows machines in it.
Interoperability with the other side is crucial. You have to
show how Windows desktop can access OS X Servers or XServe
RAIDS. You have to show Mac Entourage accessing Exchange
Server. You have to should Active Directory, etc. etc. May
be you do, but I didn't see it at the show.
Hope this helps...

For those that came by the Apple booth at FOSE - what did you
think?
Did we have the right products and people there? Was there
anything
that you thought should have been there that was not?
Anything you
especially liked?
