DSS issues like securely deleting a file, and sanitizing a hard drive so it
can be released from classified back into general use...
It used to be that we could rely on the DSS' recommendation of Norton
Utilities for Macintosh, if only because that had the same name as Norton
Utilities (for Windows). But the NUM product has been discontinued since
last year, and may or may not continue to work. YMMV. (Symantec specifically
does not support it any longer.)
DSS does not have the familiarity with OSX that it had with Mac OS 8 and 9,
and apparently there is some further disparity in knowledge between
individuals at DSS.
Some questions might be:
1. What is the Secure Empty Trash function of 10.3? How does it work and how
well does it work? Does it really delete a file (or files) securely enough
to satisfy the agency?
2. How does one "sanitize" a hard drive?
The first question might be appropriately answered from the Terminal with
man srm, but acceptance may vary by DSS officer.
The second question has not yet been answered as far as I can tell, and it
is a question I have been actively pursuing an answer to for a couple of
months now.
In fact, if anybody on this list knows of a DSS-approved method for
sanitizing hard drives in OSX, I'd like to hear of it.
