The Active Directory plugin is part of Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server.
It is for use with Active Directory networks where NO smb packet
signing and/or smb packet encryption is required.
Go to: >>Applications>Utilities>Directory Access
You will see the Active Directory plug in listed.
The ADmitMac plugin is not free. It is a commercial product:
http://www.thursby.com/products/admitmac.html
If you acquire ADmitMac, our Active Directory plugin must be turned
off. Thursby provides detailed information on installing and
configuring their plugin.

Macintosh computers can authenticate to and work with AD using the
Active
Directory plug in. However, generally, the Army has smb packet
signing and
smb packet encryption turned on - the Active Directory plugin that
comes
with Mac OS X does not provide smb packet signing/packet encryption.
This requires that you have the ADmitMac plugin installed from
Thursby
Software. The ADmitMac plugin provides this functionality.

A question: Can someone from Apple tell us exactly what the
holdup is in
getting official approval for Macs to connect to our AD domains?
We've been
hearing for quite some time now that it would happen "soon." No
one tells us
exactly what the hold up is. What's the problem? Why hasn't it
happened yet?
Is it going to happen within the next month, six months, year?
"Soon" no
longer really satisifies.
