And my mail is indeed going through an
exchange server, however I get digitally signed messages all the time, that
don't exhibit this behavior. I suspect that it involves how
Exchange handles the digitally signed messages that have been modified by the
list server.

Based on some of the messages on this thread that have
come through since my original post it does seem related to digitally signed
messages... in addition, a response Dave Hale sent directly to me indicated he
and I are both using the same version of Apple Mail (2.0.5) and yet he did not
see the "attachment problem" with an example message I pointed him
to. So I suppose Exchange server may be playing a part as well. We recently
migrated from an Exchange 5.5 server to an Exchange 2003 server and it's been
happening with both (even though the MS KB article referenced below only talks
about Exchange 4 and 5).
