ALCON,
As some of us remember, in the advent of the PowerPC the Mac took a significant leap ahead of the PC in terms of processing power. Using the POWER architecture from IBM, the PowerPC silicon actually can process floating point (1.2/0.6) faster than integer (12/6) math. Accordingly the PC Intel architecture has a speed degradation associated with processing floating point numerics as all other systems do.
In any regard, the PowerPC made the Mac a very suitable for applications that would otherwise require Digital Signal Processor like CAD rendering in real time, real-time digial audio processing, real-time digital video processing, photograph content analysis, etc. This benefit is very apparent when using Photoshop to do a Gaussian blur on a G5 for example.
Accordingly, the first Graphing Calculator was not only extremely useful but also an eye popping demo for the capability of the Mac in real-time rendering of graphics (especially splines). The story behind this application is actually very interesting as it was developed on at Apple by a person sneaking in the door to work for free. I call that 'dedication'.
