Port issues aside, one potential problem you are running into is a timeout
when ssh attempts to do DNS lookups on connect. If I remember right 5
attempts will be made, if the server needs to wait for a timeout it can take
a very long time to get the password prompt. I can't remember if the client
on OSX attempts lookups as well but when I was battling this problem
previously I think I caught it attempting them as well.
To get around it I think newer versions of OpenSSH add a config option to
disable it, you can also pass "-o UseDNS=no" on the command line.
