Michael -
This works fine for me. Here is what I do:
1. Mount the SMB using Apple+k (Connect to Server) Make sure you
choose the option to save the password in the keychain
2. Once the SMB share is on the desktop as a globe icon, click on
Apple->SystemPrefs->Accounts
Then click on your user-id and then click on the Login Items tab.
3. Drag the SMB's globe icon from the desktop into the Login Items
table to add it as an entry.
That's all you need to do. Now each time you login, the share is
mounted. A couple years ago, this didn't work but it does now.
Don't create an alias. Simply drag the globe of the real mount to
the Login Items in Accounts.
However, if the SMB mount is un-mounted for some reason - ex, the
server goes down and back up, or you disconnect your system from the
network, the SMB mount will not be remounted.
Therefore, I solved this in two separate solutions:
My first solution was a small perl script that gets called by cron
every 5 minutes. This perl script determines if I'm at home or at
work and if at work, it calls a special applescript to mount the work
fileserver share. If at home, it mounts my PowerMacs share. This is
really cool.
I take my laptop from work to home, I change Locations, and my home
PowerMac share mounts. Likewise, I go to work, change my location,
and my work shares auto mounts. This is done without having to logout.
In my second solution I writing a Cocoa application I call
MountWatcher. It is nearly complete. It allows me to add as many
SMB and AFP mount entries as I'd like and mount them from
MountWatcher. If I tell MountWatcher to "watch" a particular mount
record that I've added, it will check to ensure the mount active and
if not it automatically mounts it. Once I'm done with the GUI part,
I'll follow it up with a command-line version so that it can be
called from cron or Login Items. With this, I'll manage the records
from the GUI but won't need to keep the GUI running to "watch" the
mount. If you want a copy, I'll send it to you when I'm done -- just
let me know.

Is there a way to make a drive automatically map to a windows drive

I've fought with this over and over... I've try putting the volume
in the user start up group... I've tried creating the alias to the
file... nothing works. I can do it with AFP, but not with SMB.
AppleCare tech support has no idea.
