ARD2 allows you to use VNC. The difference is in speed, ARD is much
faster than a VNC client. I don't know if this has changed or not.
Remember, using VNC to attach to a Mac only gives you remote access,
it doesn't give you all the administration benefits of ARD. Looking
at the list of New Features, there are several that might allow me to
use ARD3 instead of syslog entries as well as remote syslog use. Data
is encrypted between the admin station and the clients, which I don't
believe is the case with typical remote syslog use.
I still would like to see a light version that competes with VNC so
we could have an encrypted (and fast) remote desktop ability. I'd
like to see this version for free or included in something like the
iLife suite.

Looks like it has some good new features.
One noteworthy item is that ARD also allows you to use VNC.
ChickenOfTheVNC is now a free universal binary and is opensource.
I've been using it on the Intel macs but now that ARD has a new
version we can upgrade.
