I'll tell you why... politicians, lobbyists, and no credibility.
When dealing with armor, etc - I think the contractors have integrity,
and they strive to be the best.
With the computer, Microsoft has so many politicians in their back
pocket it isn't funny.
But on the IT level, I find that 95% of the people in ANY IT (not just
government), are stupid. They do not want to learn anything new, and
want the comfort baby blanket of "rebooting" their machines.
You are right about the the "big one" hitting Windows computers... I
think it will be related to the JPG exploit just released... it's
going to take something terrible happening to make it get better
unfortunately.
I did something in our agency, something for the good of healthcare
and ultimately got my ass handed to me. Not because it was wrong, but
because of the politics involved.
If it weren't for my past performance record (which was excellent,
with more awards than ever obtained before), I probably would be gone.
It sux, but now I do what the "standard" employee does in our
agency... and I am sure you all know what that consists of so I won't
go into it.
On a cool note, new intel macs look awesome.. dual proc MacBooks... I
am placing my iMac INTEL order this week.

For almost everything we do to defend our country, we have multiple "backups," (e.g. we don't buy ammo for our weapons from only one vendor, we don't buy batteries from one source, fuel from one plant, etc., etc., etc...) Yet, there are those out there who would have us use only one operating system... What happens when there truly is some sort of computer "super virus" and 99% of our desktop systems are infected?

I know that in a perfect world, we can save money by standardizing on one OS, but it isn't a perfect world. I hope that time doesn't show us that the IT managers who are forcing us to use Windows aren't as short sited as the Government agencies that knew we had terrorists taking flight lessons, and so forth. I know the Mac community will certainly be able to stand up after some tragedy happens and say, "We Told You!," too bad someone isn't listening now...
